virtual sketch date

I really enjoyed this study. The photo was beautiful.I attempted several paintings but never completed them. This is probably my most complete painting. The photo is somewhat out of focus, I am going to try to photo it again in the morning light. As far as this painting goes, there where just so many ways to crop this photo. I painted some with the vase (never finished them)but I think this was my most successful. I tried again this morning to get this painting more in focus and well, I give up. I'm not sure if it's the painting ,my camera, or the computer. Everytime I download the picture it looks out of focus on the computer. I checked my camera settings and used the auto focus set to default. I also tried different manual settings. oh well, this is my entry the actual painting is quite crisp .

Nice composition, Cathy--I like the way you divided the space. There's a great feeling of movement in this painting.
I have the same problem with out-of-focus picture: in my case I think it's because I'm holding the camera.

Cathy, I cropped the image too after I drew it. Like you, I actually tried several crops before posting. It was tough to pick which one was best. I like your colorful intepretation. The close crop and use of colors gives it such a fluid feel. Very nice!

Some images need lots of experimentation before you're satisfied with the composition.

I think this one worked very well. I love the almost abstract feeling of it.

I like how you've gone right into the flower, close up and personal - lovely shapes and colour, and free brushstrokes.

I love the bright colours and the intimate composition - you have done a great job!

I like your version a lot. Its beautiful and as a photographer I love closeups, as they give a view not everyone normally sees. My suggestions, not knowing what camera you have, would be: to set a timer on your camera, or someone told me once to take a deep breath when your are ready to shoot/click, it temporarily steadies you. Some cameras have IS, image stabilization or if you have an SLR the lenses themselves even have image stabilization to help with clearer focus. Great Job!

I love your colors and the crop! I had a lot of difficulty in getting an accurate picture too - it can drive you crazy!

I love the texture you've achieved, you can feel the thinness of the petals - sense the light coming through.

I love the colors you used. Would love to know what medium you used, paper/canvas size, etc.....gives one a context for what one is viewing.

I use macro mode, no flash, and use a tripod or stack of books for photographing my work (the stuff that doesn't fit on scanner). Seems to help.

Cathy,
I like your cropped version, but would love to see more. Great color choices, intense and bold, my favorite. I use a scanner for all my paintings, I find the camera does not do them justice.

This is beautiful cropped. I find red especially hard to photograph.

Like Jeanette, I like the abstracted quality. The fuzziness does not bother me, though it's a shame not to be able to see it as you intend us to. I wonder whether the camera is too close to the image, perhaps? Do you have a close-up or macro setting you can try? Clean lens?

Oo! There are alot of great things happening in this image ~ I hope you finish some of the others you mention. I think they will end up at least with some really interesting bits, and perhaps with success like this one

Hi Cathy,
A while back you left me a comment on my blog asking if I use masking tape to achieve the lines in some of my paintings...and I don't...it just sort of develops by my drips and then I accentuate those "divided" areas just by applying more color with my brush. Alot of negative painting comes into play as well...thanks for the comment!

Luminous! Wonderful colours.
How did you get the background so brilliant and smooth?

And I do like your ripped pears as well. It works.
